I received my B.A. in art from Regis College, Weston, MA. I have studied graphic arts, painting and printmaking at several institutions, and with established New England artists. The Lettering Arts are an ongoing passion. For over thirty years I have studied under many nationally and internationally renowned calligraphers. I am a Gallery Artist in the Russell Gallery at the Plymouth Center for the Arts and the Front Street Gallery in Scituate. I exhibit and win awards in printmaking and photography in juried shows in the South Shore area of Massachusetts.
Printmaking is the creative means of expression for which I have been searching. This medium of many techniques has integrated my graphic design, photography and painting skills. It offers exciting methods to express my love of nature’s colors, textures and changing moods of light. I take great pleasure in mixing colors to print layers of ink for intense color saturation. Middle grounds and foregrounds are created by the reduction method of wiping ink off the plate to capture atmospheric moments and vegetation. Some printing plates are made with branches and found treasures that appear along my path. Combining these collograph plates with monotype backgrounds adds textures in relief and color depth to the prints. In addition to the brain challenge of planning the images in reverse, there is the thrill of the “aha!” moment that often happens by pulling a print off the press and finding unexpected results. My painterly monoprints are influenced by hundreds of my photographs that digital photography has made possible. The main source of my subject matter is the Herring River and tidal marshes where I live. The vistas and wildlife are ever changing. Some of my prints have areas designed to have passages added in calligraphy. There are still times that my response to an image needs to be interpreted as a creamy acrylic or juicy watercolor painting.
I am grateful for the blessings my creativity has brought to me and the response viewers have to my work. I find joy in interpreting the beauty, light and intricacies of nature. Portraying angst and darkness I leave to other artists, as I ponder the power of “P” in my life – pencils, pens, paints, pigments, photographs, prints…and powering it all – PRAYER.
